The advice here to choose "Export to" does not work because "Word" is not amomgst the options. How do I get round this?

If you are using Pages 10.2 -> 11.1 on Catalina, with an open Pages document, it definitely has an Export To option for Word:

If you really do not have Word… in that sub-menu, does it appear as an option from your Share menu > Send a Copy > Mail > Word > Next… and ends up as a DOCX attachment to a new Mail compose window? If it does, you can right-click on it and choose Save Attachment, and place it where you want on your filesystem. Then click on the red traffic light of that Mail compose window to get rid of it.

Another alternative would be to open the Pages document in Pages for iCloud and then download it as a converted DOCX document, using this interface:

When you choose Word from that Download selection, it will open a new box and grind away converting it from Pages to Word. If it is successful, it will download it into your Downloads folder on your Mac. You may receive a security challenge asking it if its okay to do that.

The Word option in the Export To sub-menu has been there for many versions of Pages for Mac, and its absence would suggest that something has interfered with the Pages application's internal build. If you are running any anti-virus, or so-called application removal tools, I would thoroughly remove them from your Mac before re-downloading Pages v11.1 from the Mac App Store.
