I would like to send an airtag to someone with the intent of tracking with it after delivery. Do I need to physically have the airtag near my phone to register it to my "Find My" app, or can I have someone else register it to my account remotely?
In other words, can I order an airtag and ship it to someone else and still track it with my account once it arrives?
No, you will need your iphone in close proximity, only then can you set it up. There is no way to link it or set it up to your apple id without it being close to your device.
Hi, yes if its tagged to your id. However, the person you send it to wont be able to tag it to his or her phone/apple id. Every time an iphone locates it, it will send you a ping and the location of the airtag.
please make sure the privacy of the person the tag is being sent to is not compromised.

Thanks, but I'm already aware of the proximity detection and setup. I'm asking if there's a way to set it to my appleID without any of my devices present during initial setup.
