Difference between Intel and M1 processor

Looking at purchasing new MacBook Pro and undecided as to which processor to get.

Currently have MacBook Pro mid 2010 with Intel.

Tried to read up on the pros and cons of each but quite didn't understand differences and the vote was up on the Intel.

Any comments or advice appreciated. Thank you.

The Intel and M1 chips are significantly different, especially if you want to run Windows apps, use multiple external monitors, or run VMs.
