Is Carplay helpful or more of a distraction?
What are some good tips to keep Apple Carplay from being a distraction while a teenager drives?

Using CarPlay is probably less of a distraction than using the phone directly:
Set up CarPlay with your iPhone
You also should consider having Do Not Disturb While Driving turned on. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb to activate it.
