Workout playlist behaviour inconsistent

Starting a workout using the workout app on WatchOS 7.6.1, I swipe left to view the Now Playing view and tap play to listen to my playlist - the play automatically setting shown in the screenshot below does not seem to work…

The workout goal is reached and I swipe right to see the Controls View to tap stop. This stops the workout but the music continues to play (in my AirPods).

Immediately, another workout is started using Apple Fitness+ and as soon as the countdown timer disappears, the music fades away and the Fitness+ audio fades in. My playlist is no longer playing. The Fitness+ workout finishes and I would like to continue listening to the playlist where I left it in the first workout.

Switching to the NowPlaying app, I tap play and the playlist starts from the beginning. Is it possible to continue listening to a playlist from where one left off from a previous session?
