How do I fix a problem with uploading Word files from my Mac to a website? Note that I can attach files to my email without a problem. In Dropbox the files I can't upload are faded out. Is the problem related to the files being in iCloud, which I recently activated through System Preferences?

You mentioned the files are in iCloud, if you download a physical copy of the file to your Mac, can you then upload it to Dropbox? If so, it is likely that Dropbox only allows uploads from your physical storage rather than a cloud service.
If you are able to upload files stored locally to Dropbox as expected, we'd recommend reaching out to Dropbox directly for confirmation on if their platform supports uploading documents stored in the cloud.
