AVIs cannot be viewed directly on the iPad. You'll need to convert them on your computer to a format the iPad can display:

There are a number of converters available, but which will work for you will depend on what codec was used in those AVIs (AVI is just a container format and may contain video and audio tracks compressed using one of a number of different compressors). If you search the iTunes for Windows forum for "video convert", you should find a number of suggestions.

Regards.

The specs for the iPad does indecate that AVIs can be played on the iPad.

file formats; Motion JPEG (M-JPEG) up to 35 Mbps, 1280 by 720 pixels, 30 frames per second, audio in ulaw, PCM stereo audio in .avi file format...

The Apple nano 5th generation nano wraps it's video in an AVI container that plays on the iPad using the photo app. I just imported a few video into the iPad with the CCK from a nano and they play just fine. I haven't looked at the codec that the nano uses...

As stated above the AVI container can have many different codecs wrapped into it. You need to 'get info' on the video to find out which codec is being used. Your video player on a desktop computer should give you this info.

Like Dave says, according to Apple's iPad tech specs, the iPad does indeed support a type of AVI video. In other words, iPad supports some types of video cameras watch their AVI footage via the camera card reader accessory, but it won't let you watch downloaded AVI movies on the iPad.

If you want to watch downloaded AVI movies on you iPad,you should first convert them on your computer to a format the iPad support.
