how do i find out what version of Safari is installed on my Ipad air ?

Since Safari is a built-in app that comes along with all iOS updates, if your iPad Air is still running iOS 12.5.4 (because it cannot support more recent versions of iOS, due to hardware incompatibility), your Safari is not updated to the latest 14.7.1 version.

If you need a more recent browser (Firefox or Chrome), download it from App Store.
