Should I be able to use my iPad for other things while it is streaming airplay to my TV?

I have HomeKit running on my iPad air 10.5. I used to stream TV over airplay to my TV but when I change my screen on the iPad to another app for example the calendar, the airplane stops.

is this correct or not? And it’s been working until recently.

That is normal. Some apps allow the use of other apps on your iPad while it streams content to a nearby TV. Some allow it and most do not. Apps that allow streaming and use of other apps on an iPad generally are apps that can be downloaded and installed on an iPad and also on the Smart TV or Apple TV.
