Depending on the age of your MacBook & the actual update (or- Upgrade) your Mac

can use; if the unit is not too old for the newest macOS, it may support going forward.

Details you may know or could find by checking the 'About this Mac' under Apple icon

in Finder menu, to see what the system has now; and hardware info one needs to know.

'Old versions' are those ranging from recent/last ones superseded by most current ones.

There are 'downloadable installers' in the above site; for various build year models.

And information there too, which should help identify the supported hardware

specific for each level of upgrade; these are full versions and not step-updates.

If you have issues, you may need to schedule a service for inspection beforehand

or contact an Apple store Genius, to see if they could help identify & upgrade SW.

[An old Mac probably won't be capable to run latest macOS. A 'less-old/new' system may

be available, that's newer than the original as-shipped system. ~ That'd be an Upgrade.]

And if your Mac is running El Capitan, and identifies as MacBook: Is the product 'white'

or does it have a 'metal colored' enclosure? Does it have a 13-inch display? That'd be

an early "MacBook 2006-2010" build year model wouldn't be posted in newer MacBook.

(An outlier between 2006 - 2010 which would have Metal case, within group: Late

2008 MacBook5.1, that could upgrade to El Capitan 10.11.6. ~ were two specs.)
