WiFi Calling with iPad
When using wifi calling from iPad Mini 4, iOS 13.7.1, does the associated iPhone need to be in close proximity? I am getting call failures, and wondering about proximity.

If your both your Cellular Carrier and your calling plan support WiFi Calling, your iPad can make and receive calls independently of the iPhone - even when the iPhone is switched off, elsewhere, or using a different WiFi network. Not all carriers support full WiFi calling - and many Carrier representatives don’t technically understand or acknowledge its existence.
More information about Continuity and the relevant Cellular services can be found here:
Continuity
Use Continuity to connect your Mac, iPhone, iPad, iPod touch and Apple Watch – Apple Support
SMS/MMS Messaging
WiFi Calling
Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling – Apple Support
In conclusion, if your Cellular Carrier and tariff support WiFi Calling, it is theoretically possible to configure WiFi Calling service for your iPad. After WiFi Calling is enabled and configured, your iPad can continue to make and receive cellular calls independently of your iPhone whilst connected to a WiFi network. Otherwise, if WiFi Calling is not available, your iPad can make calls via your iPhone (using Continuity) subject to the iPhone being turned-on and connected to the same WiFi network as your iPad.
I hope this information and clarification is helpful in understanding the capabilities of both your iPad - and if you have one, your iPhone.

Hey there tgarrity,
Thanks for using Apple Support Communities! We see you're having an issue when using Wi-Fi calling, and we'd like to help.
When you make and receive Wi-Fi calls from your iPhone, be sure to follow this:
"Make sure that you're signed in to iCloud and FaceTime with the same Apple ID that you use on your iPhone. Also make sure that your devices have the latest software.
To place a Wi-Fi call from your iPad, iPod touch, Apple Watch, or Mac, follow these steps.
Call from your iPad, iPod touch, or Mac
You can also place a call by tapping a phone number in Contacts, Mail, Messages, Safari, and other apps.
Call from your Apple Watch
Make a call with Wi-Fi Calling
Make and receive Wi-Fi calls on iPad
Take care.
Thanks for your reply. I do have WiFi calling set up correctly on both my iPad and iPhone have been using it for several years. However, sometimes I get a Call Failure when my iPhone is in a different room, but it seems to work when I move it closer to the iPad. They are both on the same WiFi network/SSID. I have been using TMobile for several years and they do support WiFi Calling, but maybe they have a limitation, as you suggest.
Another point of interest, my iPad will not make calls to phone numbers identified in Safari, say for a business in a Google search. When I tap on the number with a phone icon next to it, nothing happens. But of course if I have the same number in my Contacts it will dial the number using Facetime successfully.
Thanks,
Terry
