Why does my IOS calendar (iPhone 12 pro, IOS 14.7.1) randomly open in list view? When it happens the menu button at the top isn’t visible to change it back to calendar view. The only way I’ve been able to correct it is by killing the app and opening it again. It’s not a major issue but incredibly annoying.

Looks like your Calendar app is corrupted if it was not zoomed in.
First try this => Force restart iPhone - Apple Support

I hear you and thanks, but I’ve tried it multiple times and again after your suggestion to no avail, unsurprisingly. It’s not zoomed in, and even if it was (which it’s not), why does it randomly open in that mode and how may I prevent it from doing so in the future? That’s the heart of my question.
Yep! Ancient wisdom that should’ve occurred to me. Don’t know why it didn’t. I’d still like to know why it corrupted and why the corruption persisted even after uninstalling & reinstalling the app and later incidentally transferring all data to a new phone. As long as it’s fixed, though, I’m happy.
Well, it worked for a while, 13 days to be exact, but the calendar app just did it again. Any other suggestions? I know force closing the app, and I now know that rebooting will temporarily correct the problem. I’d really like a permanent fix, though. Thanks in advance.
I hear you, and I will try that if that’s the only available next step. Weird issue is, though, this is a new phone and the problem carried over from my last phone, an iPhone XR. Strange that I seem to be the only user that’s ever had this experience.

This certainly suggests the issue may be associated with where this calendar is housed.
List view is typically turned on/off using this indicator. I don’t see this indicator in your screenshot. Perhaps you’ve zoomed the screen.
Are you in the habit of killing the Calendar app from the quick-launch (multitasking) screen? Don’t do that.
Only when it’s the only option to switch it back to calendar view from the virtually unusable view (above).
No, I haven’t. That’s exactly the issue, as stated in the OP.
Try double tapping your screen using three fingers.
(That’s the method to turn off zoom.)
It’s not zoomed.
I suggest you try it regardless.
