I"ve followed the directions to cancel the Apple icloud subscription but my iphone still shows the 2 TB version as checked. I have a new phone and this was a trial period.

You mentioned that you had signed up for a trial that had let you upgrade your storage plan, has the trial period ended yet? Until the trial period has ended, you may still have access to the features provided by it. You may double check the status of your subscription from the article you came from.
