The age of your Mac will determine if it can receive a newer than High Sierra upgrade. As Apple has ended support for High Sierra, there will be no further updates to it.
With the menu > About This Mac panel, take note of the information in parenthesis on the product description line. Using strictly the Safari browser, visit How to get old versions of macOS. Find the operating system that supports that year build of your Mac. From there, you can follow the appropriate operating system link to the Mac App Store and potentially download the installer into your /Applications folder.
Back up your data, check your applications for compatibility, and if your Mac model's recent enough, click on Mojave, Catalina, or Big Sur.
