It must be set up properly on both your iPhone and your Mac.

iPhone: Settings => Messages, check iMessage, it should be "on," Send and Receive should show both your phone number and your Apple ID email. Start new conversations should be from your phone number. Tex Message Forwarding should show your Mac as "on." Send as SMS should be "on."

On the Mac, open Messages, open Preferences, then select iMessage. Make sure your Apple ID is active and Enable this account is checked. You can be reached for messages at: should show both your phone number and Apple ID email and both should be checked. Start new conversations from should show your phone number.

Even with all this set up right, sometimes messages with images fail to send. Try again with a reduced size version of the image you are trying to send, and don't send multiple images at once. Send them one at a time.

Thank you those are good things to keep in mind. Under the Preferences in iMessage there was no phone number indicated, only email addresses. I was about to ask about that when I clicked on the ? question mark in the bottom right corner. That gave me a choice about a phone number. When I selected yes, then it displayed on the iMac settings and asked that I verify the number.

Thanks, not sure I would have gone there first. Appreciate the help.
