ipod classic "firmware file not compatible"

My ipod classic, model MC297LL, will not restore. I get the following dialogue box: "itunes has detected an ipod that appears to be corrupted. You may need to restore this ipad before it can be used with itunes.

When I click restore, I get: "the ipod could not be restored because the firmware file is not compatible."

I have restarted my computer, uninstalled/reinstalled itunes with version 14.11.4.15.
