Is my work Mac recording audio when the computer is on?

I was listening to music and working on my Mac (Catalina), when I noticed that the input microphone was picking up my voice and my dog's barking when I didn't want it to do so. Just wondering...is there a way to tell whether or not the audio is being recorded? Also, if I slide the volume to the far left, is it off? I did this, and the internal microphone is no longer showing that it is picking up audio.

Your Mac shouldn't be recording audio unless you intend for it to do so. If your computer is managed by your organization, they might have access to your microphone.

In an upcoming software release for Mac, macOS Monterey, there will be an indicator in the top right of your screen when an application is using your microphone. This update will be released sometime in Fall 2021.

Until that release, you can secure your Mac with security updates.
