Apple never had anything before 10.7 available for download. You will have to find an installer DVD on the used market. Make sure you get the black colored retail version disc, not the machine-specific gray one.

Should your old iBook G4 have/had an earlier Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.(11) that would

do well into future when realization arrives that Leopard 10.5.8 takes too much in

the way of resources. And it isn't really that much of an upgrade over Tiger.

Before my last model iBook G4 12-inch (mid 2005) was gifted/given away with all

the original stuff in boxes and on discs; I restored it back to as-shipped 10.4 and

gave it all the original updates.

That way, the original complete Apple applications were included; otherwise a

great need to find and use the companion DVD/CD set for Apple applications.

Those were not included on the main install Leopard disc. A box of three discs

was separately sold, to build-out the system; & they were usable with Leopard.

And there also are two versions of iTunes last versions (one each: for Tiger/Leo)

from Apple server; updates the 'internet radio/music player' to a last best finish.

A clone of the earlier complete system on an external FireWire enclosed hard drive

is a good way to revert to the older system; or to install and boot a later OS X. To

learn how to install, manage, and restore older systems and have tools, works best.

These enclosures require either an older chipset with 'Oxford-type' firmware; or an

updated version, which enables FireWire booting of PPC Macs from external HDD.

Some information about Time Machine and Clones, is within this archived database:

If your iBook G4 was already at Tiger, it was the best system for G4 hardware.

A workable browser is fading fast.. TenFourFox for PPC Macs.

My experiences with Leopard on single CPU/core drives in portable Macs led

me to revert after upgrade, back to Tiger. ~ A very stable long running OS X.

(After Intel core-duo MacBook1.1 arrived, that does better w/ Leopard 10.5.8.)

Older versions of ShirtPocket Software's/SuperDuper! show earlier a free clone

utility for Version 2.7.1 Download link: for Tiger, Leopard, and Snow Leopard.

[Their main site SuperDuper! lets you read about various builds; there's newer.]

The older original Carbon Copy Cloner from Bombich, is available:

The Download CCC 3.4.7 for use on Tiger (10.4) and Leopard (10.5).

CCC 3.4.7 and 3.5.7 are provided as-is; out-of-date, have no support.

https://bombich.com/software/download_ccc_update.php?v=3.4.7

Anyway, the concept is a project with learning curve; enables one

to restore a variety of antique and/or near obsoleted Macintosh.

A resource to learn more may still be online: LowEndMac.com.

Early G4 iBook models have slower CPU, that cannot run 10.5.x.

Ones w/ 867MHz CPU won't run Leopard. A work-around exists

System needs extra resources (RAM + free 'HDD space' for use

as Virtual Memory; a faster RPM drive is better with VM.)
