GPS not working on iPad 11” pro with navionics. Dangerous for navigation.

Tried to use iPad 11” pro with navionics. Brand new iPad and very expensive! GPS fixing is intermittent which throws out speed and direction calculations. Discovered from this forum that this is a widespread problem.

DO NOT USE IPAD PRO FOR NAVIGATION. It’s not fit for purpose. I’ve also noticed that Apple are ignoring this thread, other than giving the usual patronising advice about restarting, uninstalling and re- installing, updating the s/W etc.

has anyone had any sensible advice from them yet?

iPad Pro, iPadOS 14

There’s no need to become hostile. Comments were not (and neither were they intended to be) patronising.

Many here that seek help do not, perhaps, have the level of understanding or experience that you yourself have outlined. Some are genuinely of the uninformed belief that GPS is a panacea of unbroken reliability - that will work flawlessly in all situations.

Thank you for providing additional detail as to your situation and application. For those of us that are knowledgeable in this field, a greater understanding of your application offers opportunity to provide specific and informed comment.

From your description, I assume that your are operating in UK waters - and as such, hopefully, will be monitoring either Notices to Mariners and/or Notices to Airmen. If so, you will hopefully be aware that there are many jamming trials being conducted throughout the UK that regularly interfere with civilian GNSS and ISM systems over wide areas.

You are correct in that there have been some reports of issues with Navionics Apps when used with iPad. Of those that have encountered difficulties, issues have often been resolved by installing a GPS repeater above/below deck - and/or by utilising an external GPS receiver (e.g., BadElf) coupled to the iPad using either a cabled connection or Bluetooth.

Without more information about your specific issue, such as the environment in which the iPad is being used, it is difficult to provide specific comment or guidance.

However, in directly addressing your more emotive comment - and whilst having no intention of suggesting that a problem does not exist - no experienced navigator will ever rely solely upon a single source of navigation in safety critical applications. GPS, in common with all radio navigation aids, is susceptible to interference and jamming. Signal jamming is becoming an increasing common issue in some geographic locations as authorities experiment with “theatre denial” and jamming of drones.

The environment in which the iPad is being used is on a boat. No engine, minimal, low voltage, low current, solar powered electronics. 19’ 1.5 ton modern gaff rigged sailing yacht with no engine. Below deck in dry environment. Deck is 1/2 inch balsa cored GRP. I am an ex- Royal Navy, trained navigator with 30 years experience of navigating on everything from open day boats to LCT’s at 7.5k tons, starting my electronic navigation in the days of Decca, loran c and RDF. I know what it is and how it fits with my paper based navigation. I also have extensive experience of telecoms systems from my 10 years at Motorola Systems. So I really don’t need advice on how experienced navigators behave.

I am looking for genuine advice as to why my £800 iPad does not do what it’s supposed to do with Navionics. If you have any knowledge and/or useful specific information as to what the problem might be, this would be welcome. This is an apple forum, and I’m looking for useful, specific actionable advice from people who know the systems, know what this problem is and how to fix it or that it is not fixable.
