AirPods Max Intermittently Dropping Inbound Audio when Using Zoom Conferencing

My wife's work has her on Zoom conferences pretty continuously through the day. We bought her an AirPods Max headset thinking that it would be more comfortable for her, and would last through an entire day with its longer battery life.

She's conducting her conferences on a MacBook Pro (16" 2019). This all works flawlessly when using standard AirPods.

We're disappointed to discover that the inbound sound on the AirPods Max when using Zoom is intermittent. It occasionally just drops out entirely. Sometimes it runs continuously for several hours but other times it needs to be reselected in Zoom every five minutes or so.

This doesn't appear to be a problem with the Bluetooth connection, in that when the incoming sound drops out, it still shows that the AirPods Max are connected via Bluetooth.

We've discovered that we can temporarily fix the issue by selecting another device in Zoom preferences and then reselecting the AirPods Max, but when we have to do this every five minutes it really impacts the continuity of the conference and makes the AirPods Max unusable.

We are running the latest MacOS and AirPod Max firmware releases.

Now, I would expect that the standard response to this is that it's a Zoom problem not an Apple issue. Consequently I'm also reporting this issue to Zoom. But my hope is that someone will agree to take this seriously enough to take responsibility and to look into it.

I've seen several other posts on this identical issue, but as far as I can tell, it has not yet been addressed.

Your guidance is welcomed...

Hello Gleven_2020,

Thanks for posting here on the Apple Support Communities! This is a place where other Apple users can submit questions or respond to others to help lend a hand. If we understand correctly, when your wife is using AirPods Max and on a Zoom call, sound stops working intermittently.

Great troubleshooting so far. Has your wife had a chance to test with any other apps such as FaceTime? If so, does this only happen with Zoom? While it may not be a Zoom issue testing with another app can help isolate where this occurs.

Also, try the troubleshooting steps from If the sound from your wireless headphones cuts out or is distorted which addresses this issue in particular.

Have a great day!

I was able to successfully get my AirPods Max to work correctly again.

I previously followed all online documentation, including the factory reset, which did not work.

However, out of frustration, I kept holding the 'reset' keypress instructions for 20+ seconds, and that seemed to work. I suppose that previously I was not holding the 'factory reset' buttons for a long enough duration.

I have this exact same issue! So frustrating. I've tried resetting the AirPods Max, re-pairing the AirPods Max with my computer, using a different microphone, etc.

Similar to you, I encounter zero issues when using my non-Max AirPods. When I use the AirPods Max with my iPhone or iPad, I have no issues. So bizarre.

I began to encounter this issue once I upgraded to Big Sur. I'm on macOS 11.5.2 right now...any help would be greatly appreciated.
