Magic mouse not working - not moving cursor - after 11.5 update

M1 Mac mini just upgraded to 11.5.2 (20G95)


Magic Mouse was working before upgrade. Afterwards the button presses (left and right) plus scrolling all work but I can't drive the cursor by moving the mouse. Tried new batteries (its the version 1 mouse so takes 2 x AA's) different desktop surfaces and deleting and pairing the bluetooth and nothing helps.


The Mouse shows up as connected with no issues and a full battery. Its recognised in the "mouse" preference page when searching for bluetooth mice and the led on the mouse is solid green.


I've a first gen trackpad and that's working fine, as is the Magic Keyboard 2.


If I unpair the mouse from the Mac mini and connect it to my iPad Pro 11" it performs correctly and can fully control the cursor position on screen so I don't believe there is any hardware issue.


Can the community shed any light on this?

Always helpful to work through the basics but the article didn't really help. I had power cycled the mouse and the Mac Mini, repaired the blue-tooth connection after manually disconnecting and confirmed there were no other sources of interference close by.


Being the version 1 magic mouse there's no option to directly connect via lightning/usb so that doesn't help either.


Other functions of the mouse are working as expected and without delay or hesitation (Button presses and scrolling) so the blue-tooth connection is established, its just that the Mac Mini isn't seeing or at least interpreting the mouse movement.


Thanks though for the suggestion and hopefully with that information added, someone might be able to spot what's going on?


Has anyone else got the same hardware & OS version which is working ok?? My gut feeling is that something in the latest update has changed/broken the support for the original Magic Mouse with my M1 Mac Mini. I think there were blue-tooth issues when Big Sur + M1 first came out but I didn't experience anything until now.

I am having the same issue after my Mac updated to the latest version of Big Sur (11.5.2)! The mouse gets "hung" in the middle of the screen as I move it. Then it enlarges to a black mouse pointer and just sticks on the screen. It is SUPER annoying. I have rebooted. I have turned off and on the mouse and reconnected several times. I also have an older mouse, with no lightening connection available. Apple really needs to fix this. I work from home and it is really impacting my ability to work! This never happened before the update to the new version of the OS.

Additionally, I've been working in the same location on my desk with the same mouse and same Mac since 2013 with no bluetooth connection issues. The article recommended by Apple is no help.

I have the same issue, with my MacBook Pro laptops (personal laptop and work laptop). I found that the mouse works well after boot up, but after an hour or so, I encounter issues with my mouse while using a standard mousepad (with the same results that you describe). If I remove the mousepad, I can move the mouse and have the cursor move somewhat sluggishly, but that isn't the desired result.

My setup includes the new Magic Mouse (purchased a few months ago), and new MacBook Pro laptops purchased this year as well. I have all updates applied for my personal MacBook Pro, and my work MacBook Pro is running Big Sur 11.5 (the latest version allowed by my IT department.

Give this a try: boot into Safe Mode according to How to use safe mode on your Mac and test to see if the problem persists. Reboot normally and test again.


NOTE: Safe Mode boot can take up to 3 - 5 minutes as it's doing the following; 

• Verifies your startup disk and attempts to repair directory issues, if needed

• Loads only required kernel extensions (prevents 3rd party kernel/extensions from loading)

• Prevents Startup Items and Login Items from opening automatically

• Disables user-installed fonts 

• Deletes font caches, kernel cache, and other system cache files

I have the same symptoms.

MacBook Air M1 had since January 2021, separate Apple magic keyboard and magic mouse2 worked fine with Big Sur but since the Monterey update the cursor moves chaotically across my screen like a drunken sailor on shore leave. If I pair and use it on my MacBook Pro 2017 with Mojave 10.14.6 it works perfectly.

Strange tho' I think we have different macOS but the same symptoms developed around the same time.

It'll be down to the Russian hackers!
