How to stop a recipient from appearing at top of Messages recipients

IOS14.5 the same recipient appears at the top of the messages window even if not the last contact sent to or received from. Unable to remove the recipient when I try to slide the contact to the left it does not move.

Might you have pinned that conversation? A pinned conversation would appear as an image in a circle above the list of conversations.

You can check by long-pressing on the conversation in/above the list. In the popup menu, you should see an entry that says "Pin" or "Unpin" depending on the current state.
