How can I be sure my subscription is canceled? I don’t see the cancel but my subscription says active. It was a feee trial for Balance that will renew in one year automatically but I do not use it or want it. I followed the steps to cancel, just not sure why it’s still active?

See the following from How to cancel a subscription from Apple - Apple Support
If you cancel during a free trial period, you might lose access to the subscription immediately.
Note the use of the word "might."

If you don’t see Cancel, the subscription is already canceled and won't renew.
Additionally, if a subscription is cancelled it will usually have some wording that says "Expires on" but if it is not cancelled will typically say "Renews on"
