My Apple ID account has been stolen (2FA did not help!): what team in apple can help?

my apple-id account has been stolen last Friday: e.g. someone just changed password and replaced security phone number ... that all even though 2FA was activated;

I tried to contact apple support several times, however suggestions from support are as stupid as incompetent: suggesting process to unlock my iPhone to change your password (really?).

the real problem is that all is depending on that account, no way I can/want to change my email address: this is mine (I still have control of my (non-apple) mailbox)! and so are all data/docs/photos stored in iCloud: I just cannot access any of it anymore;

does Apple has a security team that just understand the implications and can provide a solution: e.g. just put the original phone number back so that I can take control of my account again ...

From the Apple Support article below.

Without proof of your identity via security questions and other carefully selected criteria, Apple Support can't help you reset a password or perform any other actions on your account. These policies are audited and reviewed on a regular basis.

For someone else to “bypass“ two factor authentication they would need access to either one of your trusted devices or your trusted phone number on the account.

A common scam is to send someone a text or call pretending to be Apple and asking the person to provide the four digit authentication code that pops up on one of the trusted devices screen‘s. Once that verification code is given out the scammer immediately changes everything on the account so the person no longer has access.

Since they have removed your trusted phone number, changed your email use for the Apple ID and change the password you are probably out of luck because it is near impossible for you to prove you didn’t do it or didn’t give somebody else permission to do it.

Hi Eric,

I had approximately 12 calls over last weekend with various apple support in France, Germany and Ireland. I tried to have an apple support schedule from the US (yet Ireland called back)

Bottom line is (depending on who I talk to (incl. managers)):

  • "prove that this is your iphone so we can unlock it?" << ***! I am talking about appleid being stolen (despite of 2FA)
  • "yes, change your password to a strong one" << ***! I cannot log in anymore as the appleid has been stolen (=unknown password + unknown questions + unknown associated phone numbers (I can see the number endings which are not mine))
  • "we are sorry, you will have to create a new apple id" << ***! the email I use as appleid is mine, so why can't you just reset the phone numbers to mine (that I can prove easily)?
  • "we understand, we are sorry, we cannot do anything" << ***!
  • ... and other non-sense

all-in-all, that's too easy for apple to hide behind a "Apple Support can't help you reset a password or perform any other actions on your account." especially when:

  1. apple advertises "One account forreverything you do with Apple" and pushes you to get all in apple icloud and have all connected to icloud ...etc
  2. but if someone takes over your appleid account (even WITH 2FA activated!!!), then you just loose everything

while the topic is now in the hands of authorities (for good or bad), the conclusion is simply that (a) icloud is NOT secure (2FA can be bypassed as it seems) and (b) apple icloud is not sound, obviously; I am now moving all of personal/family/company out of icloud to a solution where I have full control.

anyhow, as I still need to get my account locked / cards removed / restore purchase ...etc , does anyone know what team at apple can help!

thanks shoeluvr13,

the take over took place at 4:40am as per notification from apple that the password & numbers have changed; note: email is unchanged and I still have control over the mailbox;

As per 2FA, 6-digit OTP codes are automatically appearing on all connected devices (phones, pads, notebook), and only valid for short amount of time: at 4-5am no one was to provide those codes to anyone ... unless someone had that appleid account already before and connected another iDevice to that same account to get the 6-digits .... but that only shifts the problem: how could someone get that password...

currently one option I see, is actually that the macbook is also compromised. so far I could not find any software that does not belong there...

thanks muguy .

unfortunately not very useful as non of the suggestions can be applied:

  • I cannot sigin on that account on any apple website (appleid, ...etc) anymore as the password was changed
  • the account **had** already 2FA ... but it obviously did not hinder for someone to take over my account
  • I don't have access to any of my apple cloud data anymore
  • i don't have access to any of my purchased items
  • I cannot lock the account (e.g. associated credit cards, purchased items ...etc)

I still have control over the associated email account ... but this does not seem to be of any help
