after i upgrade there is a hard drive disk on my desk top. what do i do with it?

That is perfectly normal, that is your mac.

You can choose whether to have Hard Disks etc on your Desktop.

Click once on the Desktop.

Click on Finder in the menubar.

Select Preferences.

Go to General

Select which items you want to see on your Desktop.
