App Store sign in endless loop with appleID

I've just purchased an M1 chip iMac - August 2021 - MacOS Big Sur 11.5.2.

I was alerted that there were updates to several Mac Apps and so I tried to update them but then I get into an endless sign in loop for the App Store. How many of you are dealing with this currently and what is the solution?

I've chatted with support, but we were unable to complete the session. Here's what we tried:

  1. I went into the apple ID website to add billing and shipping information for my account.
  2. That didn't change the outcome.
  3. Started the computer from safe mode and attempted the sign in with the same result - an endless sign in loop.

I'd love to know the solution, because this just seems...well...a stupid (but frustrating) issue.

Are you running any anti - virus programs? Using a VPN?

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

You are welcome. The purpose of trying in another admin user account is to see if it is a system wide problem or if the problem only occurs in your normal user account. If the problem only occurs in your normal user account, that usually indicates there is something in your user that is causing the problem. It is another troubleshooting step.

You would sign in with the same Apple ID.

Hi jgGumm_22,

Welcome to the Apple Support Communities!

We are happy to help with the issue you are having with not being able to update your apps due to being stuck in a sign in loop. You might want to try connecting your network directly using an ethernet cable. Also take a look at If you can't connect to the App Store, iTunes Store, or other Apple services

Hope that helps!

At this point I'm still locked out of my Apple ID. After being stuck in the loop and Apple sending me text after text in the 2-step verification process, Apple now claims they've sent too many codes and even after waiting 24 hours, 48 hours and beyond, I'm getting the same error message of "too many texts have been sent". I'm now waiting for a call today from support after a week of waiting. We'll see if I can ever get in again. Until then, this process is on hold.

The advisor suggested that the original problem is from not agreeing to terms and conditions before trying to sign in to the App store. I'll update this thread if I ever reach a solution.

Thanks for the response Eric, I think I've seen your name on other older posts related to this issue as I've been researching.

I am not running anti-virus or VPN.

Currently, I've been working with Support on this issue and we've gotten to the point of putting iTunes onto my PC and trying to sign in there. The problem is that I've used too many tries to sign in so I'm locked out of using the Apple ID for 24 hours. (I can't express how frustrating that is!) So, I won't know if that solution will work until tomorrow.

Now, setting up another administrator account, how does that help this situation? Would I not be still signing in via my same Apple ID? I assumed it was the Apple ID that was the problem tied to this.

Update - I finally was able to get back into the Apple ID account. I wonder if the engineers did something or if it fixed itself by me leaving it alone for over a week?

Also, today I thought I would try to sign in to the iTunes software that I loaded on my PC since it appeared that I could get into the Apple ID again. I was fearful when it again asked me to "Review" my Apple ID account, worried I'd get into the loop again. However, it moved me beyond that where I was able to agree to Terms and Conditions. I have not yet tried to sign in through my new iMac, but at least I've gotten through this step now. I'll update on how it goes with the iMac. Support is supposed to call me in 2 days...but I'm hoping I'll be able to tell them that the problem is solved. Will update...

Update to the Update -

Yes, I was now able to sign in to the App Store on the M1 iMac without getting into that Review loop. I updated several Mac apps. That seemed successful, though at the top after the updates were complete it wanted me to choose "Accept" to allow the App store to connect these updated apps with the machine and my Apple ID, otherwise it would not update them ever again. I clicked Accept and it had a popup that stated that it was unable to do this. So frustrating that there are so many glitches with this. There was no option given of remedying this - I guess I'll have to ask Support in a few days.
