You have a limited 60 days to purchase the additional "Apple Care+" after a new purchase.

Your Mac ships with a 1 yr limited warranty as is.

You have 60 days during which to purchase AppleCare PLUS for your notebook computer.

After that time, it is no longer available to you. Allowing Users to sign up far later would mean only Users with serious problems would sign up later, killing the "insurance effect" (of having some users who will not have claims) and drive up the cost of the program for everyone.
