Samsung vs BigSur

After updating my mac Air to Big Sur, I no longer have the use of the Samsung ML 2160 printer and also of another clx printer, which until the update download has always worked excellently.

I will be grateful if someone with the same problems as me will send me news about it.

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the note! Previously I unsuccessfully tried also V3.93.01 with the ML-1675 with several drivers in Big Sur while resetting the print system several times (via right-mouse in the printer settings) but I'll try again later. I have not yet tried Gutenprint or other more esoteric drivers.

Hi,

Have you tried the (Feb 11, 2021) Samsung Universal Print Driver V3.93.01 at https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softlib/software13/printers/SS/Print_Common_SW/Samsung_Mac_Driver_V3.93.01.dmg for the ML-2160 (when choosing SL-M2020, or possibly some other models)? Look upon this as an experiment. See also the HP article https://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c06520117 (and the similar ML-2161 model in the list).

Software conflicts cannot be ruled out when testing drivers. Data may be lost. Make sure that you have backup copies of all important files (documents, photos, et cetera) before you start.

An ML-216x printer (without a W suffix) would have a USB port only. If necessary, a small external print server may be worth testing in order to allow the printer to connect to a network. There are USB print server models for Ethernet or Wi-Fi from a number of manufacturers.

Hello again,

Thank you for the reports.

As an alternative to using a virtual machine, have you carried out any experiments with printer sharing (the USB printer connected to, for example, the aforementioned 2004 PowerBook G4 or 2010 MacBook)?

Also, an old spare PC running an earlier version of Ubuntu could work as a print server. Linux drivers for the Samsung ML-1675 appear to be available from HP. Ubuntu uses CUPS and understands Bonjour. Just a few changed settings would allow a local (USB) printer to be shared on a network.

Ditto. My wife just bought Samsung ML-1675 from a flea market for 5€ and also a new cartridge so we had to try it.

It works on the old 2004 PowerBook G4 & OS X 10.5.8 (Samsung-ML-1675-Print-Driver-for-Mac-10.5-to-10.10.zip) and 2010 MacBook & OS X 10.13.6 (SamsungPrinterDrivers_v2.6.dmg with drivers for Samsung ML-1860 Series).

But I haven't got it to work on Mac mini 2018 & macOS 11.5.2 yet (it just prints out an error message complaining wrong drivers no matter what). I very seldom print but I might try if it works via a VM running OS X 10.11. If not, we use the old Macs for the occasional prints.

OK, I re-tried several installs and drivers for Samsung ML-1675 in Big Sur 11.5.2 (Samsung_Mac_10.15_Driver_V3.92.00.dmg, Samsung_Mac_Driver_V3.93.01.dmg, gutenprint-5.3.3.dmg) but none of them worked.

But the SamsungPrinterDrivers_v2.6.dmg with ML-1860 drivers installed in El Capitan VMware Fusion 12.1.2 VM worked OK so that is a workaround for occasional prints in Big Sur. I guess also Mojave or Catalina VM might work but did not try them now.
