Mail app in public?

I've a basic security question - searching the forum didn't quite answer it.

Using the Mail app to check my MobileMe account, is my Apple I.D. and password safe from snoopers when using public WiFi?

I would use MobileMe web mail, but it won't work with the iPad.

Thanks.

I don't use MobileMe but I'd assume that it is like most email and uses a secure connection. I've been checking my mail from public wifi for years with no problems.
