My iTunes library was on an external hard drive on my old MacBook Pro. Now that I have 'Music' that came pre-installed on my 2019 MacBook Pro, how do I move the library file to my computer's hard drive so that it preserves my playlists, ratings, and comments? I've gone to a great deal of trouble to customize my library, and I already lost this data once due to an inexperienced Apple Store 'Genius Bar' employee. I know that it will need to separate out the video files (digital copies) and podcasts to those apps, so I wasn't sure how to do this to preserve the data. I never had trouble moving the library file from my computer to my external when it was the iTunes program, but they had to change things for the sake of changing them.

After using the option-start method to open either Music or TV and selecting an old .itl file you will be prompted for a location to save the converted library. Typically the converted library will attempt to reference the media at its current location. You should be able to set up both Music and TV to use your original iTunes Media folder, or you can opt to make the Music library on the internal drive, then consolidate to a media folder inside the new library folder you've created.

When you use the option-start-Music process you get prompted for a location to save the converted database. Thereafter that will be the database the Music opens each time it starts. The media folder is available from preferences. If you want your Music on your internal drive you can make sure the library folder is there, reset the media folder if needed, then consolidate to the new path. See Make a split library portable - Apple Community for a general primer on library organization. While based on iTunes the principles are much the same for Music.

Sorry for the delay. Moving content by hand tends to break things. With iTunes you could selectively consolidate selected content to the current media folder, which created new copies and updated in the links in the .itl file. Unfortunately it doesn't work like this with Music where consolidate appears to be an all or nothing affair. However if you want (and have room for) your music on your internal drive then after converting the iTunes library to a Music library (which will leave out non-music content) you should be able to designate a new media folder and consolidate the library to that.

Hi Mystic Halo,

We see that you have your music files stored on an external hard drive, and after getting a new one with the updated Music app, you want to ensure all of your information moves to the app.

In short, the first time you open Music it should scan your internal drive for your music library files and automatically import them. Depending on how you've configured the external that may not happen and you may need to manually point the Music app at your music file location on your external. See how to update that preference in the Music app below.

If those tips don't resolve the issue or if you have further questions, feel free to reply to this post.

Cheers!

What is the location of your active .musiclibrary file? What is the path to the media folder listed under Music > Preferences > Files? The Rearrange Files option is greyed out if the library is already using the modern layout that adds an additional Music folder inside the media folder. Arguably it would make more sense for Music to have an option to undo this switch, but it doesn't.

Mystic Halo,

Thanks for clarifying.

In that case, you'll want to use the steps in the following article to copy your files back over to your Macs internal storage.

Locate the main iTunes folder on your external drive and select it to import. Additionally, ensure in the Music app under Music > Preferences > Files that the option to "Copy files to Music Media folder when adding to library" is checked prior to importing your library.

Take care.

So I tried migrating the entire iTunes folder from the external to my MacBook Pro, however the digital copies alone take up about 600GB of space. I really just want access to my music and voice memos on the computer. I want everything but the movies/digital copies sourced on my MacBook's hard drive. Is there a way to do that? Do I still need to move the .itl file to the computer before opening Music and citing it when selecting option upon launching the Music app? It was my understanding that if I did that, it would attempt to save the digital copies in 'TV' locally, and there's not enough hard drive space for that (I have about 160GB available on the MacBook). I need to get everything consolidated and saved before I get my new phone. Thanks!

I opened Music and told it to source from the original iTunes Music .itl file on my external. I can see all my music with ratings and settings and both smart and custom playlists. The 'Keep Organized' and 'Copy to Music Media folder' options were checked, however when I check to 'Consolidate files', it does nothing. There is nothing in the new Music Media folder sourced on my MacBook hard drive except 'Music Library.musiclibrary'. I've tried closing the Music app and reopening, but it will not consolidate files (and the 'Reorganize files in the iTunes folder' option is greyed out), which brings me back to my original problem.

I thought it would sort out music and podcasts, copying them into the new local Music folder as their new location, and then I could tell it to source from Music Library.musiclibrary, however nothing is copying into that folder, and I cannot move the entire iTunes library files to my hard drive as I do not have enough hard drive space. So what was the point in separating different types of media if they aren't actually separating?? I'm beginning to think there is no solution...

I cannot move the entire original iTunes folder with all the artists, podcasts, artwork, etc. from the external to the computer because the digital copies take up too much space (600GB). And it was my understanding that if I tried moving each folder individually EXCEPT the videos to the hard drive and then redirect it, that the .itl file would not know how to locate anything since the paths would be different, and it could potentially mess up my setting/saved data/ratings, etc.
