When I plug my iPad into my computer it says 'not charging'. Why?

Many computer USB ports are limited in the current that they can supply.

Unless explicitly designed for charging, most computer USB ports can only provide 0.5A @5V (i.e., 2.5W) or 1.0A @5V (5W). The majority of iPad models require at least 2.4A @5V (12W) to reliably charge.
