'You do not have permission to open the application' when using a scanner on Mac - Apple Support

This could be a good advice for some hard-/software combinations, but it just didn't work for my iMac with macOS Big Sur 11.5.2 and a Canon MX320 printer/scanner.

The scanner still reports an error, saying that a necessary file is missing or corrupt, or adjustments could be wrong. Suggestion to re-install the app. — Didn’t help 😞

Any further advice ?

Hi,

Any details (versions, et cetera) about the drivers/software that you have tested?

Is the printer/scanner as such detected?

Does printing work? At least according to the Canon web pages, supported printer drivers are not available for macOS Big Sur. Drivers for older system versions may or may not work.

Have you tried scanning via Image Capture? An ICA driver for the MX320 may be needed.

If applicable, Canon has some additional information.

If nothing else works, VueScan (a commercial application, which appears to support the MX320) is often suggested by other members here.

Thanks a lot, Jan,

... for this link. (Seems you understand/speak? German. Sure.)

The version no. of this ICA driver is (nearly) the same as that of my Canon IJScanner1.app (v4.0.0), so maybe it's from the same family? Right: no support for Big Sur so far - same for the Canon IJ. The latter one used to work well for me from Leopard (10.5) through all Apple OSs up to Catalina (10.15). I'd guess Apple's OS 11 new built-in safety sanctions (for security reasons) break this app. Perhaps this Canon app uses a non-Apple kext (kernel extension), which generally aren't allowed any more?

Canon IJScanner1.app V 4.0.0

Is the printer/scanner as such detected?

Yes, it is. I got a similar error message as in this Didioz’ posting from Sep 1, 2021 9:38 AM .

Does printing work?

Yes, no pb.

Thank you! Yes, I know. I already got similar info from Canon DE (Germany), that Canon do not intend to support a scanner driver for MX320 on Big Sur any more. But because Apple Communities showed a simple trick to circumvent these errors - which seems to work for several hard-/software combinations - I hoped that somebody could help me with more advice, perhaps after reading my error logs presented above.

Additionally I could show an associated Canon IJScanner1.app diagnostic crash log (~70kB).

Have you tried scanning via Image Capture?

Yes, the Canon IJScanner1.app is in the /Library/Image Capture/Devices/ directory.

An ICA driver for the MX320 may be needed.

I don’t know this driver — do you know, where I could get it from? Canon?

If applicable, Canon has some additional information.

Thanks, this seems to be the same advice like this one from our thread, and I already tried it, unfortunately without success, as reported above.

Yes, this will be my next trial step. I’ll report back.

Thank you!
