iPad 1 battery replacement

So how exactly I get service for product that is vintage? Apple authorized service provider could not provide battery replacement and apple support sent me this article, which is frankly bit useless.

If you decide to go down the path of purchasing used, secondhand Apple devices, here is how to avoid purchasing an Apple iOS/iPadOS device with user activation lock, in the future.

If you purchase any iPad, or any Apple iOS device, for that matter, used/second hand, online, or even in-person, make sure this iPad does NOT have user activation lock and has been properly reset for sale.

A properly reset for sale iPad should initially power up to an animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen.

DO NOT take the iPad seller's word that this iPad is user activation lock free,

We have seen plenty of used iOS device purchasers get scammed.

User Activation Lock can never be bypasss, circumvented or worked around IF there is no correct previous/original user information to be able to do so.

Apple doesn't get involved with ANY user activation locked, used/second-hand sold devices, either.

So, buyer beware.

If purchasing a used device in-person, power the iPad ON

If the iPad DOES NOT display the initial animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen, then pass on purchasing this iPad.

If the iPad powers up to any other screen, then forget purchasing this iPad.

You cannot trust that the seller actually has the correct needed info to properly reset the iPad back to factory settings right then and there before the actual purchase and exchange of money for the iPad, in question.

Pass on the device.

If you are purchasing this used iPad online ask the seller to provide multiple images, either online or be sent to you via email, showing this animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen of the interested in purchasing iPad model.

Even better, ask for a short video be sent to you showing this animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen, in action and in its entirety, posted to the online ad or emailed to you.

If the online iPad seller refuses any of these requests, pass on the iPad. DO NOT buy.

Good Luck to You!

🙂 Some Open-Minded Thoughts on your Reply, as a Fellow Apple, User...

Q1. "[...]there is a error, Its Ipad Air 1, not ipad 1, purchased in late 2014 so its not that old in my opinion. I`m not sure why moderator retitled the question to ipad 1?"

A1. Wouln't know about the retitling, my 2014 iPhone is just plain slow. But my iPad 2 works great - having not touched it for so many years. Point Being: It just gets used so much that it get slow, becoming more prone to failure.

Q2. "The battery issues started over a year ago which would make the ipad air 5 years old, but because of the lock downs I didn't get a chance to visit service provider earlier."

A2. Back in May of 2020, I wrote a user tip --- Coronavirus Pandemic - Why Your Streaming May be Down at the Moment - User Tip. Youtube was skipping quite a bit, and quality was pretty much hauling for a month or two, due to everyone working out of the house, and taking classes at home. But, things have lightened up a bit.

Q3. "Nevertheless I feel there is too much fast consumerism pushed around by these corporations, I`m long past interest in latest gadgets and newest technology to satisfy my ego, bring short lived 'happiness' and show off. I have different values now, recycling, reusing and have minimal impact on my environment if I can help it."

A3. Apple has their own recycling. So, keep that in mind, should you decide to update. As more and more Apple Stores open, things won't be so locked down. Use this site, should you choose to rid of it: What to do Before you Sell, Give Away, or Trade in your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch - Apple Support

Q4. "I need something that is good quality and last long with additional service. I expected the ipad to last at leats 10 years with battery replacement. If I need to replace it every 4-5 years I can just purchase some cheap tablet that will do same job."

A4. With Apple being proprietary, they make their own calls --pretty much forcing everyone to upgrade, or be stuck with never be able able to get software updates again. Technology changes, and people have keep up with it. But that's how Apple is, I guess.

Users, like you, who post here need to stop abbreviated their iPad year and model.

Depending what older iPad Air you have ( it's either an 8-year old 2013 iPad Air 1st gen, that is stuck to some version of iOS 12 OR its a 7-year old, 2014 iPad Air 2 that can run the current versions of iPadOS), either way, a device replacement, in lieu of an actual battery, maybe still possible.

You need to search online for your nearest, “local” Apple store location and call contact phone numbers and call to make an appointment to have your Apple iPad diagnosed and options presented you.

Failing that,

You need to contact Apple support via the contact support link located at the upper right hand corner of every Webpage of these Apple support communities.

Use the Hardware Repair & Battery usage & Charging support categories.

OR

by installing and using the Apple Support app found in the iOS App Store.

Hi,

Not sure how is Ipad Air 1 different to Ipad Air 1st gen? The moderator changed thread name...

Anyway I already was in authorized service provider who diagnosed battery failure. They were going to replace the model for "battery charge" but called me few days later they cant get replacement model or spare battery, so they sent me the ipad back in same condition.

I rang apple customer support who advised me to visit different store, which I will do but highly doubt they can get the replacement if the first store was not able to? They also gave me this link which suppose to show if there are spare parts available and how to service the vintage models, but is basically just list of models with no info how to get them serviced whatsoever. https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201624

I was hoping to get more info here.

Thanks

Tomas

This is a user helping other users with tech questions

forum, you are not addressing apple here  just  fellow users

you can try contacting apple Get Support (apple.com)

and or give them feedback Product Feedback - Apple

apart from that even if you could get a new battery it would likely not work very well for you,

apps in app store mostly require an ios version much higher than the ipad supports

and most complex webpages require some javascript functions which older versions of safari does not support.

if you have apple recycle it then it will be done in the most environmental correct way I would assume

Forget this iPad!

It is not worth anything and even if a third party battery could be installed by an competent third party repair center competent enough to do a battery replacement in that iPad, it will cost more than tbat old iPad is worth, which is basically nothing.

Also, during an actual battery replacement, there is ALWAYS the possibility of complete data loss.

If that happens, there is no way, NOOOO WAY to recover anything from that old device as Apple AND ALL third party app developers stopped supporting this ancient iPad by 2015.

NO SUPPORT! NO APPS! NOTHING!

This is an over 11-year old iPad, today!

It's 2021, now.

Time to move into the present and with a much, MUCH newer of new iPad model.

A WHOLE LOT has happen with iPad and iOS ( now iPadOS ) in the past 6-11-years since that iPad model was introduced.

Time you really need to seriously consider a purchase of a new iPad model OR a much, MUCH “newer” and less expensive, refurbished or used iPad models, from better known, trusted sources, like other Apple product/device retailers/resellers, some locally or from online, on the Web/Internet, capable of running the latest iPadOS versions.

There are PLENTY of newer, older iPad models that can run the latest, current versions of iPadOS.

If you need OR ONLY able to purchase older, less expensive iPad models, look at older IPads from 2014 and later.

All of these older model iPads below CAN run the latest iPadOS versions and the up and coming iPadOS 15.

2014, 9,7 inch screen iPad Air 2 models

2015, 7.9 inch screen iPad Mini 4 models

2015-2017, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro models. ( 1st gen Pencil support )

2016, 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro models ( 1st gen Pencil support )

2017, 10.5 inch screen iPad Pro models ( 1st gen Pencil support )

2017, 9.7 inch screen iPad 5th gen models

2018, 9.7 inch screen iPad 6th gen models ( 1st gen Pencil support )

2019, 10.2 inch screen iPad 7th gen models ( 1st gen Pencil support )

2020, 10.2 inch screen iPad 8th gen models. ( 1st gen Pencil support )

Get the largest internal data storage model you can afford as NO Apple iOS device has expandable storage.

I am sorry that you had to learn all of this, but this does not change any of the facts regarding these older iOS devices.

Sorry & Best of Luck to You!

Hi,

Reply 2 as I dared to discuss apples environmental policy and my opinion....

Thanks for your reply, its ipad AIR 1 purchase in late 2014, not ipad 1

Battery issues started over year ago but because of lockdowns I was not able to visit apple service provider earlier which made the ipad little over 5 years old.

Thanks
