By "base level applecare" are you referring to Apple's Limited One-Year warranty and not the AppleCare+ plan? If so, any "other" damage (which Apple does not define) would be considered "out-of-warranty" and incurs the $449 (US) cost of repair. However, only the Apple technician can provide you with your repair options/associated costs will be after they throughly examine the phone.
