TWO QUESTIONS; Reinstalling El Capitan will I loose all apps and settings? My Ethernet adaptor no longer responds

FIRST QUESTION:

Reinstalling through the CMD+R option will I loose all my apps and settings (preferences and so on?) or not? What do I need to backup?

SECOND QUESTION:

My MacBook Pro (Retina, 15-inch, Mid 2015) no longer connects to the Ethernet. The router and cables work fine with other machines, I wonder if there is some software which will tell me if the problem is in the computer port or in the adaptor itself?

Thanks a lot to everyone

First question - If one is doing an In-Place Reinstall - meaning installing the OS over and existing version of the OS - in theory - no it does not do anything more than replace missing and / or corrupted elements of the existing OS.

Second Question - Ethernet Port not functioning - AFAIK - Only and Apple Authorized Service Center could truly determine if it is functioning or not.

You could try connecting with the Ethernet Cable to Router and turn Wifi Off - then attempt to log into the Router Interface and see if the computer is getting an ISP Address assigned or not.
