Old iMac as external monitor

To use a late 2009 27 inch iMac as external monitor, must you have an adapter or can you use a chord with Mini DisplayPort on one end and USB C on other?

iMac, macOS 10.12

I just bought a new iMac. I want to use the old iMac as external monitor. All the videos I’ve watch say you have to use an adapter. But my question is, can you just use a chord, Mini DisplayPort from old iMac to USB C to new iMac. I found a chord with those ports.

It won't work. See the document linked: Use your iMac as a display with target display mode - Apple Support.
