Safely partitioning an external hard drive with data already on it

Hello

Assuming there is enough space, can you safely partition an external hard drive with data already on it? If so, how? Unfortunately, I have iphoto libraries and time machine back ups on the same drive. I just learned that this is a no no, which is probably why I am iphoto issues.

Using Mavericks 10.9.5

Thank you.

Modifying partitions on a drive is always dangerous and risky! I would never modify a backup drive as you may lose all your backups.

You are living very dangerously mixing a backup drive with storing data on the drive as well. This never ends well for your data.

You should have a dedicated drive for your backup and another drive dedicated to storing your other files.

You should always have frequent & regular backups of your computer and any external media which contains important & unique data. Backing up the the iPhoto libraries stored beside the TM backup is not a backup since if the hard drive fails you lose those iPhoto libraries and the TM backup.
