How can I restore text messages

First check to see if you have activated iCloud Messages: Settings > (Your name) > iCloud > Messages. If it is on then your text messages are gone.

If it is off and the deleted messages are in your last backup then you can restore from that backup. You will lose any data added since the date/time of that backup. Restore your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch from a backup - Apple Support
