pc says my iphone is "usb device not recognized".... I don't remember my password!

Myphone is disabled and I want to restore it to factory and erase all data, but my computer doesn't "recognize the usb device" and doesn't list it under itunes though it is listed as one of my devices... just not showing up as connected.

Hello and welcome to Apple Support Communities  janfran2,

Thank you for contacting us. You have come to the right place and we are happy to assist you. We understand you're having an issue restoring your iPhone to factory default. We can understand why you’d reach out for a solution.

We see that you came to Apple Support Communities from If you see the Restore screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch. Your iPhone isn’t able to communicate with your computer until it’s placed in recovery mode. Both the previous article and If you forgot the passcode on your iPhone, or your iPhone is disabled provides the steps to place your iPhone in recovery mode. Once you progress, in order to set up your iPhone to factory settings, you’ll want to select “Restore” and not “Update”.

Are you using an Apple branded cable? Is iTunes updated to the most current version? Have you tired a different port on your computer? Follow the steps here: If your computer doesn't recognize your iPhone, iPad, or iPod to see if it will resolve the issue. If not please get back to us, so we can continue to assist.

Thank you for contacting Apple Support Communities.

Best regards.
