Do I need iCloud if I only have one device?

I recently upgraded to iPhone 12. I only ever use my iPhone device, no other apple devices. My iCloud is full, just by backups alone - I use Google Photos for my pictures and have deselected everything else. Do I need to use iCloud at all if I just have this one device? Will it be needed for if/when I upgrade in the future to a new phone again? I’m tired of the storage notification. I only use iCloud for backups but it’s almost full.
