F1 & F2 for screen brightness

I have tried everything, reset of SMC and NVRAM, I've removed the keyboard and reinstalled, rebooted but since I restored macOS to another boot disk I haven't been able to adjust the screen brightness from the keyboard (A1644 or A1314) the keyboard setting say that the screen brightness is controlled by f14 & f15, neither keyboard has those function keys.

How can I change the setting to return screen brightness to f1 & f2. All other function keys perform normally.

MAC Pro 3,1

OS X 10.11.6 (El Capitan)

Apple Cinema HD Display

Apple keyboards A1644

Thank you

Mac Pro, OS X 10.11

What it means is you click on the F14 and F15 in the Keyboard> Shortcuts> Display panel on the right.

Open the System Preferences> Keyboard> Shortcuts> Display again.

Move your cursor over to the F14 and click once, then for a second time and the field will become editable.

Now press and hold the fn (function) key and then the F1 key, F14 will now be replaced by the shortcut F1

Do the same for the F15 field, click twice on it so it becomes editable, press and hold the fn (function) key

and press the F2 key.

Thanks for posting to the Apple Support Communities murray22,

We understand you want to be able to control screen brightness from your keyboard. From System Preferences > Keyboard > Shortcuts > Display, if you click where it currently shows "F14" and "F15" for screen brightness, the field will highlight, and you can assign a different key. If the key you want to assign is assigned to a different shortcut, you won't be able to use that key.

Have you selected F1 and F2 for another function on your mac, that could be why you are getting the 'error' beep.

You will need to look through all your other Keyboard shortcuts to find out if they are being used for another function.

Normally if you select a new shortcut that is the same as another you get a yellow warning triangle, did you see that.

Red Face!

I had fitted the old SSD from my MACbook Pro to the MAC pro, which is when this whole thing started. I thought perhaps it was something to do with the cinema display, in the wrong DVI port, and then...

I discovered I hadn't plugged in the USB cable of the Cinema Display! Once I did that, all returned to normal. The old adage of making sure its plugged in wins again.

Thank you to all who offered suggestions, my knowledge has gained from the experience.
