How Much Free Space Do I Need To Install The iOS 15 Update Next Monday?

So I've learned iOS 15 GM drops September 20 for all supported iPhone models, of which mine is part.

I now OS updates are important and will want to install it as soon as it comes out.

How much free space do I need in my iPhone to go from iOS 14.8 to 15?

Also I've read that 15 will allow installation on devices with as low as 500MB of free storage.

Do I need to worry or am I all set?

Will iOS update free up space if it's smaller than the previous iOS update? I have an old spare 4s, it's running iOS 8, want to update to 9.3.6 so I can try and use some apps. It says it will need about 1.3GB. The phone has 1.4GB available. Does this mean, after the update, the phone will have 0.1GB left to use OR does it mean, it will install this, but then remove the 4GB or so it downloaded to install iOS 8 - so after the 9.3.6 update, I'd have (4GB-1.3GB) 2.7GB additional to the existing 1.4GB available (so a total 4.1GB available)?
