beach ball spinning on new mac book air 2021

I have a new MacBook air and there is very little space used on my hard drive and i don't have many apps open but it still shows the dreaded beach ball spinning even if i do a simple task like type one sentence in to the google bar . I have since discovered that if i shut my Mac down as opposed to putting it to sleep and then return to it the next day i have no problem it works fine but if i put it to sleep and open up the laptop the dreaded spinning ball appears almost at once . What could be the reason i wonder ?
