Connecting Mac Mini Thunderbolt port (2012 version) to Samsung Thunderbolt 3 Monitor

I try to connect a Samsung Thunderbolt 3 monitor to my 2012 mac mini which only has Thunderbolt 2 port. Bought the Apple Thunderbolt 3 to Thunderbolt 2 converter and it doesnt seem to work (the adaptor manual recommends the reverse, i.e Thunderbolt 3 macbook with old thunderbolt monitor). I have been using the HDMI cable so far but the picture seems stretched, and the mac mini seems to be showing only max 1080 resolution (monitor resolution is 3440). Pls assist?

the video port specs for a 2012 Mini state:

Support for up to two displays at 2560 by 1600 pixels, both at millions of colors

This is via the Thunderbolt ports either via TB or MiniDisplayPort.

HDMI video output

  • Support for 1080p resolution at up to 60Hz

The HD4000 Intel graphics chip itself can only support up to 2560x1600.
