I don’t think the Apple Store will take any action to erase a drive before recycling. They just bring it to the recycling facility. If you feel more confident with an erased disk, then do so yourself before handing it over. If the device can still be operated, then you can reset it on the device itself through the menus. If the device is no longer in working order, then you’ll have to find a computer user that is willing to help you with a restore. If that isn’t an option (e.g. 4K model), then you can take it apart and remove the (flash) disk, if you can recognize it, depending on exact model, and shred that separately.

Thanks for your response. I got my answer from one of the Apple Support people at a store.
I need to bring it in to be wiped so I can recycle and I have no way to connect to my computer. That is why I would bring it in. Otherwise I know how to reset it. Thanks again.
That may or may not happen for service with any device. One of the possible actions to help solve (software) issues is to reset to factory settings. Assume that might happen, but don’t count on it.
How so? Why would you bring it in?
Apple Support told me I could bring it in to the store and they would reset to default and then recycle the device. I don't know if that's correct, but at this point I don't have many options as far as I can see.
Thanks for your suggestion and support.
I think that the best decision is to ask the apple support
thanks
I wish I could reset it through the menus, but there is no way I can see the screen to do so.
I can't hook up through the computer since it requires a mini USB that will fit into the port on the device and all I have is lightening to USB.
Too bad there isn't some way to deactivate the device through the account via iTunes.
Oh well, I guess I have 2 choices, mail it in to recycle as is or take a sledge hammer to it!
Thanks for all your good input.
