Is it possible to update an iPad II to a newer IOS?

An iPad 2 isn't capable of running 10 or above. If you're trying to update it to 9.3.5 or 9.3.6, follow the instructions in the Related Article above or use the Software Update function in Settings.

Thanks so much for the info about replacing this iPad. But, I think I am done with Apple products. As a small business owner, I cannot justify buying products and then flipping them when there is no need to simply because a newer model is on sale. This one is fully functional and works fine (except for the apps of course). I was concerned due to all of the alerts issued by CSIRT with regards to cyber related vulnerablities that have been released the other day. That in addition to it being a "linux-esque" OS - though less vulnerable than one other particular OS, I just wanted to be sure that I could continue to use it for the network related work that I do... but.. since not... This is yet another device that will be replaced by one running Linux. ( If I could figure out how to load Kali on this thing I would be absolutely giddy...)
Stay Healthy and Thanks again,
If you are referring to a 2011 iPad 2 ( 2nd generation ), then no.
That iPad is over 10-years old, now, and is too old, waaaay too underpowered and completely obsolete, in 2021.
Sorry.
Apple ended support for all 8-10-year old iOS devices nearly 5 years, ago, in 2016.
Third party app developers abandoned and stopped supporting these 8-10-year old iOS devices nearly 3 years, ago, in 2018.
There are, virtually, NO MORE third party apps available from the iOS App Store, any longer!
Third party compatible apps for such old devices are few and far between, now, in 2021.
This includes apps for both iOS 9 AND iOS 10 devices!
AND, NO WAY to initially install any older, compatible, third party apps into this old iPad.
NO MORE SUPPORT! NO MORE APPS!
Sorry, but this is the reality for ALL 8-10-year old AND OLDER iOS devices now. Especially now in 2021!
Time to seriously consider a purchase of a new iPad model OR a much, MUCH “newer” and less expensive, refurbished or used iPad models, from better known, trusted Apple product/device retailers/resellers, some locally or from online, on the Web/Internet, capable of running the latest iPadOS versions.
There are PLENTY of less expensive, newer, older iPad models that can run the latest, current versions of iPadOS.
If you need OR ONLY able to purchase older, less expensive iPad models, look at older IPads from 2014 and later.
All of these older model iPads below, CAN run the latest iPadOS versions and the up and coming iPadOS 15.
2014, 9,7 inch screen iPad Air 2 models
2015, 7.9 inch screen iPad Mini 4 models
2015-2017, 12.9 inch screen iPad Pro models. ( 1st gen Pencil support )
2016, 9.7 inch screen iPad Pro models ( 1st gen Pencil support )
2017,10.5 inch screen iPad iPad Pro models ( 1st gen Pencil support )
2017, 9.7 inch screen iPad 5th gen models
2018, 9.7 inch screen iPad 6th gen models ( 1st gen Pencil support )
2019, 10.2 inch screen iPad 7th gen models ( 1st gen Pencil support )
2020, 10.2 inch screen iPad 8th gen models. ( 1st gen Pencil support )
Get the largest internal data storage model you can afford as NO Apple iOS device has expandable storage.
I am sorry that you had to learn all of this, but this does not change any of the facts regarding these very old iOS devices.
Sorry & Best of Luck to You!
If you decide to go down the path of purchasing used, secondhand Apple devices, here is how to avoid purchasing an Apple iOS/iPadOS device with user activation lock, in the future.
If you purchase any iPad, or any Apple iOS device, for that matter, used/second hand, online, or even in-person, make sure this iPad does NOT have user activation lock and has been properly reset for sale.
A properly reset for sale iPad should initially power up to an animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen.
DO NOT take the iPad seller's word that this iPad is user activation lock free,
We have seen plenty of used iOS device purchasers get scammed.
User Activation Lock can never be bypasss, circumvented or worked around IF there is no correct previous/original user information to be able to do so.
Apple doesn't get involved with ANY user activation locked, used/second-hand sold devices, either.
So, buyer beware.
If purchasing a used device in-person, power the iPad ON
If the iPad DOES NOT display the initial animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen, then pass on purchasing this iPad.
If the iPad powers up to any other screen, then forget purchasing this iPad.
You cannot trust that the seller actually has the correct needed info to properly reset the iPad back to factory settings right then and there before the actual purchase and exchange of money for the iPad, in question.
Pass on the device.
If you are purchasing this used iPad online ask the seller to provide multiple images, either online or be sent to you via email, showing this animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen of the interested in purchasing iPad model.
Even better, ask for a short video be sent to you showing this animated, multi-language “Welcome” screen, in action and in its entirety, posted to the online ad or emailed to you.
If the online iPad seller refuses any of these requests, pass on the iPad. DO NOT buy.
Good Luck to You!
If that is a 10-1/2-year old iPad model, how long did you expect Apple or ANY other tablet maker to supoort that old a tablet?
Forever?
You'll have much lesser support and lesser longevity with any other tablet maker.
I gave you an option for older devices that run the newest iPadOS 15.
These devices go back to 7 years, ago ans can be purchase at significantly lower discounts/prices that are no where near the costs these devices originally cost at the time or the cost of a brand new iPad.
You can purchase a refurbished or used 2019 7th gen iPad for $200 U.S.D. or slightly less, today.
A 2014 iPad Air 2 can be purchased fairly cheaply today, also.
A WHOLE LOT has happened with iPad in the past 10-years and in the past 5 years since iOS 9.
Electronics and computer technologies do NOT last forever.
Do what you will.
I have already replied to your first informative response and I do believe I even thanked you. If not, thank you for your response.
I am fully aware of my options and really do not require a lecture from you about the efficacy of. this product I'm not here to get into a debate about Apple products. I simply wanted to see if my suspicions were correct about the extensibility of this particular iPad. What my expectations were are not your concern though. I simply sought an answer to a question.
I would hope if you ever get to my level of experience in tech you'll develop a better sense of tact when of responding to people. Hopefully the intoxication of what you think you know will somehow be sobered by the one day realization of how much you don't know.
Stay healthy okay?
P.S.: I always do what I will.
I am 56 years old and have been around the tech and computer industries for a VERY LONG time.
I am NOT in IT, but spent my life working in Apple-centric design and engineering companies as both part of a design team, as lead designer and part of companies’ Apple computer support teams starting at around the early 1990's
I have also, worked in in both the aerospace and electronics systems support industries.
So, I have been around and worked with LOTS of tech all of my career!
So, I DO know quite a bit in a lot of different fields and still read and research online many of the newest advances in technology, materials technologies, aerospace and airframe technologies, auto and automotive technologies,,battery and electronics technologies, newest computer tech and designs and newest types of design and engineering software.
I stay abreast of all of this as part of my own job education snd to stay current, so as to move on from job to job with more technical expertise under my belt.
That all stated, I had two very serious, major health issues that hit me within these recent years
So, I have been very fortunate, and decided to take an early retirement on my 56-year B-day.
My wife and I are doing just fine, today.
Can’t keep a good designer and engineer down.
My interests currently are in 3D print technologies and software and rapid prototyping and designing and making products with this technology.
So, my career has spanned quite a few technologies and I have amassed quite a bit of knowledge and expertise in all of these different fields I have been employed and participated in over nearly 40 years of employment.
So, you have NO clue what I am about, either
I have quite a bit of knowledge and I share only a small fraction of it here in these Apple product support communities.
So, with all of that stated.
Be Well...Stay Well!
Thanks so much for responding as well. I was hoping though I had a feeling such was the case. There is quite a bit of conflicting information "out there" on this topic. Thanks again and
Stay Healthy!
