iPhone video quality appears much better than taking a still photo of the same scene

When taking a video of a scene like say a beach for example, there appears to be more details in the video than if I take pictures of the exact same scene. In fact, to get a better quality image, I have shifted to taking a short video and snipping a frame than taking a photo.

All I do is point and shoot the video with no adjustments but even making adjustments with the photo, I can’t get it to look as good. The photos don’t look bad, but they just don’t have what I would say the dynamic range of the photos do or the details. Not sure if others experience this but if you take a photo of say a house plant and then take a video and pan over the plant, the video looks better on both the iPhone 12 Pro Max’s I have tested and I have no clue what is happening here because I can’t seem to find any information as to why this is happening.

Hi Enzentro,

We understand you're concerned about the quality of your photos and how they're turning out compared to the videos you take. When you taking a video, your camera will record in HDR by default. However, your photos aren't always taken in HDR by default. To change this, review Adjust HDR camera settings on iPhone.

In addition, we'd also recommend checking out Photos - Official Apple Support. Here you'll be able to find support articles from Apple that pertains to Photos, and it includes a user guide to assist you with your photography.

Cheers.
