Folder with question mark

The folder with question mark appears AFTER my MacBook Pro has been running, NOT at startup. It starts fine, but if I leave it dormant for an hour or more, the folder with question mark flashes and computer must be rebooted. This appears to be different from the common issue that people are having at startup. I followed the instructions for recovery (CMD R, CMD RV) but nothing has changed. Anyone have a solution? Thanks.
