Hi and welcome to Discussions,

such errors usually indicate that either your XP disc is defective or that it is simply 'dirty' or that the disc-drive itself could use a 'cleaning'.

Start with checking whether there is any kind of dirt, dust, smudges, scratches on the XP disc.
If neccessary you can clean the disc with pure water and dry it afterwards throroughly.

For the disc-drive some simply have used a 'standard' DVD-cleaner-disc.

If possible insert the XP CD in another computer to check if it is readable there.

VM are very forgiving and will install what otherwise would not in a native hard drive partition. Plus, it emulates and provides generic drivers for many functions.

As for 'wiping' the only real way is to use Boot Camp Assistant again, unless you just do a clean install over the old from within Windows DVD.

VirtualBox won't share a Boot Camp partition, which is what Fusion and Parallels will.
