Unable to Sync or Transfer Music

iTunes Version: 9.2.1
iPod Touch: 2nd Gen
OS Version: 4.0
Computer OS: Windows 7

Other info: My iPod library is manually managed.

Background info: Awhile ago I used to get an error (code 0xE8000065) every time I plugged in my iPod. My iPod would not appear in iTunes. I resolved this by enabling C-State in my bios.

Now, my iPod appears in iTunes, but every time I try to transfer music or apps from my library to my iPod I get one of several error messages:

[*] The application "X" was not installed on the iPod "X" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8004006).
[*] Attempting to copy to the disk "X" failed. An unknown error occurred (0xE8004006).
[*] The iPod "X" cannot by synced. An internal device error occurred.
[*] iTunes could not copy "X" to the iPod "X" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8004006).
[*] Attempting to copy to the disk "X" failed. A diplicate file name was specified.
[*] iTunes could not copy "X" to the iPod "X" because an unknown error occurred (-48).
[*] Attempting to copy to the disk "X" failed. There are too many files open currently.
[*] iTunes could not copy "X" to the iPod "X" because an unknown error occurred (0xE8004017).
[*] iTunes could not copy "X" to the iPod "X" because an unknown error occurred (-42).

I've tried reinstalling iTunes, resetting my iPod, restoring my iPod, restarting iTunes, using a different cable, and using a usb port in the back of the computer. I don't know what the problem could be. I'd really appreciate any help.

I too am having the same problems. A few days ago, after upgrading to itunes 9.2.1 (Vista), my iPod touch 2g stopped syncing properly. The sync jammed up a few seconds after it started and then I get the error messages that Mason described above. I have reinstalled itunes which hasn't helped and even downgraded to and older version of itunes - no luck there either.

I tried a restore and it jammed up halfway through the restore leaving me with a useless iPod in recovery mode. The second attempt I made in restoring it had my iPod refuse to turn on or reset. I thought I had bricked it. I somehow managed to get it going again with a wall charger and tried my luck with 9.2.1 on Windows XP. My iPod restored perfectly and syncs again with no problems - but that is someone elses computer! I can't sync my own music onto it on my own computer. I've tried another computer on Vista and another on Windows 7 and neither worked.

As a last resort I rang Apple support only to be told to do all the basic stuff I've done already (reinstall itunes, try another computer etc.) They then refused to help me any further unless I paid them £25 for an Apple support agreement! This is blatently a problem with the itunes programming and Apple don't seem to care - they have the cheek to ask me to pay £25 for their poor programming.

iTunes: 9.2.1.5
iPhone: 3.1.3
iPad: 3.2.2
Computer OS: Windows XP

I'm encountering the same problem with iTunes hanging only during the music sync; apps, photos, etc. all sync fine. It occurs with both my iPhone and iPad. The first song in a playlist, regardless of the song, immediately hangs itunes and stalls the sync. It never even appears to hit the external hard-drive where the music is all stored (music which iTunes is still able to play). It will eventually time out with:

The iPhone "XX" cannot be synced. The device timed out.
Attempting to copy to the disk "XX" failed. An error occurred while writing to the device.
iTunes could not copy "XX" to the iPhone "XX" because an unknown error occurred (-20).

This seemingly started occurring immediately after I installed the latest iPad update which subsequently crashed and left my iPad in an unrestorable state. Had to take it to the Apple Store to get them to reset it. Ever since then I've been experiencing this music sync issue.

I've tried all the typical things including itunes uninstall/reinstall, different USB devices, reboot, restore, etc. Running out of ideas just like I've already run out of music on my Apple devices.

I had the same problem with my Ipod touch. Disabling the CA security suite software will result in the same sync issue, you need to uninstall the software. I uninstalled CA on my computer and installed Microsoft Security Essentials (which is free by the way). With nothing else changed, low and behold my sync issues disappeared. I now have the side effect of a faster computer also, the CA is such a resource hog that it was causing more issues than just the sync problem.

i have restored my ipod, erased everything, set it up as a new ipod and even sent it to apple but the problem hasn't been fixed

it will either come up with an error -8004017, or -42
it will say an internal device error occured

i know it is not my ipod because i sent it to apple and i can sync it with my sisters computer

any ideas

I've recetly bought a new Ipod Touch 32gb 4g, off Ebay,it seemed in perfect condition, blah blah blah. but i've tried to sync my music to it, and so far managed to sync 70 songs - but i can't remeber how, as it was late at night. Whenever i try to sync more music, it (even if there are several songs) says syncing 1 of 1: whatever it is then stays like that for ages, i've left it for 4 hours before, and it hasn't moved a bit, so can i have some tehnical(to too technical though) advice to fix this problem, as it took me over an hour to sync those 70 song, and i have 1.5 thousand to sync, so please can i have advice

my ipod has manually manage music and things, i've tried deleting the music which stops it, but it just gets stopped on another one.

Also my safari has frozen - is there a way to make it permantly close to fix it? thanks

I also had this problem after installing update 4.2.
The disabling of the USB2 Enhanced driver also worked for me.
You only need to disable the driver on the port you use for your Ipod.
It's only a temporary solution until Apple get their act together.
It removes USB2 capability from the port making it about 1/10th the speed. So if you are going to use this fix be prepared for very slow sync operations, but at least it makes it possible.

There are so many people having this sort of problem it isn't at all funny.

In my last message I reported that disabling of the USB2 Enhanced driver worked for me. Well it did 4 times in a row but now it no longer works. Absolutely frustrating.
I just setup an old PC with XP starting afresh with no firewalls or security and it sync'd ok 1 out of 1 times.
So far so good.
